October was a busy month for the pulmonary hypertension community. The Alliance for Pulmonary Hypertension added five new PEP Talks and, together with the European Pulmonary Fibrosis Federation (EU-PFF), held a webinar on pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease.
On the treatment front Gossamer Bio has submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) for seralutinib to the United States Food and Drug Administration, the first generic version of riociguat is now available in the US, new data on a once-daily inhaled form of treprostinil look encouraging, and several other drugs are moving through clinical trials. Transplantation also featured strongly this month, from the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation to a French study of lung transplant outcomes and United Therapeutics’ investment in producing organs for transplant.
Finally, research continues to broaden our understanding of the disease. This month’s studies looked at the first experience with sotatercept in children, as well as the first real-world experience with it in the Middle East. Other studies covered personalised treatment based on patients’ molecular profiles, and a simple blood test index, PALBI, based on platelet, albumin and bilirubin levels, to predict hospitalisation and death. A review also looked at how the typical patient is changing as the population ages and obesity becomes more common. Together, these articles give a snapshot of a field that is moving forward on several fronts at once.
