The ability to reverse damage to your lungs and heart is getting closer: it’s about tricking stem cells into repairing organs, National Geographic, May 16, 2025

When serious illness harms vital organs such as the heart or lungs, physicians typically can only prevent further deterioration. However, following thirty years of research and experimentation, the possibility of activating the body’s natural stem cells to function as sophisticated cellular repair mechanisms is becoming increasingly realistic.

Stem cells serve as essential biological production centers that create the cells needed for tissue development and healing. Scripps Research, a nonprofit institute based in La Jolla, California, has developed an innovative method using pharmaceutical compounds to enhance these cells. This approach has successfully revitalized damaged tissue in laboratory cultures, animal models including mice and pigs, and limited human studies. Concurrently, other research teams are achieving breakthrough results with established methods that involve modifying stem cells in laboratory settings before transplanting them to regenerate new tissue.

Should this research trajectory continue, these therapeutic approaches may eventually transform survival rates and life quality for patients suffering from severe medical conditions.
