The German Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Association ph e.v. hosted a comprehensive two-day patient conference in Frankfurt, designed to provide education, support, and networking opportunities for individuals affected by pulmonary hypertension.
The conference, held on October 25-26, 2024, offered a rich and diverse program that addressed multiple aspects of living with pulmonary hypertension. The first day focused on personal experiences and medical insights, featuring talks on “Living with pulmonary hypertension” by Dr. Elena Pfeufer-Jovic, and an exploration of the complex relationship between pulmonary hypertension and rheumatism by Prof. Dr. Claus Neurohr. The evening included a dinner and social event, providing participants with opportunities for informal interaction and community building.
The second day promised a more in-depth scientific and practical approach. Renowned experts discussed critical topics such as the latest pulmonary hypertension definitions, genetic factors, emerging therapies, and treatment options. Notably, Prof. Dr. Ekkehard Grünig presented updates on therapies, and Dr. Stephan Beckmann shared insights from the Barcelona pulmonary hypertension community. The day also included the presentation of an annual award for journalism in the pulmonary hypertension field.
A highlight of the conference was the extensive workshop program, featuring 16 diverse sessions covering a wide range of topics. These workshops addressed practical and medical concerns, from vaccination updates and current research studies to more holistic approaches like Tai Chi, breathing therapies, and resilience training. Unique sessions included discussions on pregnancy with pulmonary hypertension, telemedicine, and even mountaineering challenges for pulmonary hypertension patients.
Particularly innovative workshops included sessions on oxygen therapy, patient survival strategies, and the impact of pulmonary hypertension on personal relationships. The conference demonstrated a holistic approach to pulmonary hypertension management, recognizing that patient care extends beyond medical treatment to include psychological support, lifestyle adaptation, and community engagement.
By bringing together medical professionals, researchers, and patients, the German pulmonary hypertension association’s conference represented a significant effort to provide support, education, and hope for the pulmonary hypertension community. The event underscored the importance of patient-centered care and continuous learning in managing this complex medical condition.
