Kick-off meeting of the EU Joint Action JARDIN on the integration of European Reference Networks (ERNs) into national health systems

The European Reference Networks (ERNs) are virtual networks involving healthcare providers across Europe. They aim to facilitate discussion on complex or rare diseases and conditions that require highly specialised treatment, and concentrated knowledge and resources.

24 ERNs are working on a range of thematic issues, including ERN-Lung, the European Reference Center for Rare Lung Diseases, which includes a core network on pulmonary hypertension

The Joint Action JARDIN, launched on March 8, 2024, aims to integrate European Reference Networks (ERNs) into national health systems and pave the way for their future sustainability

  • by developing national patient pathways linked to ERNs

  • developing national reference networks mirroring and complementing the ERNs,

  • developing structures for undiagnosed patients.

The Joint Action JARDIN has total funding of €18.75 million (€15 million from the EU and €3.75 million from the Member States) for a period of three years.

The expected results from JARDIN, including recommendations, blueprints and reports from concrete pilot implementations should eventually stimulate the elaboration of improved national plans for rare diseases in EU Member States.

JARDIN will therefore play a key policy role in the future development of ERNs and in the treatment of rare diseases.
