A review of the book “The Patient Priority”, authored by Stefan Larsson, Jennifer Clawson and Joshua Kellar, August 2025

Steven Gijssels is Chair of the Patient Expert Center in Belgium. He has recently published a review of the book “The Patient Priority” by Stefan Larsson, Jennifer Clawson and Joshua Kellar, three Boston Consulting Group consultants. The book calls for integrated care, more efficient reimbursement models, and outcome-focused evaluations of healthcare interventions. Tracking patient outcomes should run throughout the entire treatment pathway, they say, from prevention to post-treatment and shared decision-making between patients and providers should be the norm.

Gijssels points out that despite the insightful recommendations, the book lacks the patient perspective and this is a significant blind spot. The real decision-makers in healthcare are patients and disease-specific organizations. Without their input, the system is incomplete and fails to truly capture what patients need. Thus, while the book offers valuable ideas for improving healthcare, it misses the critical importance of including the patient voice in shaping policies and practices.
